The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) releases an annual report that includes survey results from thousands of fitness professionals. One survey by Walter Thompson, PhD helped compile a list of the top fitness trends for professionals for the upcoming year. Here are our 10 favorite fitness trends of 2018 from this ACSM list.
1. Circuit Training
This is generally a group of 10 or more fitness exercises that participants complete in succession. The circuit training style of fitness has been trending for years. And, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Perform them in a specific time frame or in repetitions.
2. Core Training
Not a major fan of crunches? Then, try core training to condition and strengthen your muscles. Tone up the muscles in your back, thorax and abdomen. These exercises also provide thorax and spine support.
3. Strength Training
This is not just one of the fitness trends for 2018, it’s essential for a strong body. It will probably remain on the top 10 trending list for years to come. Building strength and muscle mass is the right choice for people with chronic diseases, as well older adults and those going through post-surgery and post-rehab.
4. Functional Strength Training
Functional strength training is for savvy fitness lovers. The work is hard, and it will truly kick your butt. Plus, it will make your butt look tight and awesome. Strength training helps your daily living by improving balance.
5. Medicinal Exercise Training
Many health care providers and primary care physicians have taken part in this global health initiative. They encourage using physical activity when creating patients’ treatment plans. Exercise has a way of building your physical strength, which helps improve your overall health.
6. Mobility & Flexibility Training
Self-Myofascial Release (SMR) is one of the fitness trends for 2018 that’s dedicated to recovery. Flexibility and mobility rollers are very effective. Choose from a variety of rollers, massagers and balls to show your physique some love. You’ll improve your performance, function and flexibility, while reducing injuries.
7. Older Adults Fitness Training
And, now it’s time for one of the hottest fitness trends for 2018 for Baby Boomers! This is the fastest growing market in the country. As these 60s something and 70s something boomers start to go into retirement, they are still into spending, credit and more spending. For the 2018 year, expect more fitness programs and personal trainers to focus on the Baby Boomer Generation.

10. Wearable Fitness Technology
