Pearl Grading for Cultured Freshwater Pearls

Potentially the most important thing you need to understand while researching Pearl Grading to make an informed buying decision is this: it’s impossible to compare grading systems and grades from company to company.

There isn’t any standard system of grading for freshwater pearls, unlike diamond grading. All companies worldwide which grade and sell freshwater pearls are using a system which they themselves created. All systems are subjective and all systems are unique. Here is the grading system The Pearl Source adheres to for our freshwater pearls.

AAA       

  • Excellent matching
  • Top 1 percent of freshwater pearls produced today
  • Clean surface
  • Round to the eye
  • Exhibit excellent luster
  • Highest non-loose pearl grade available on the marketplace

AA+       

  • Excellent to good matching
  • Top 5 percent of freshwater pearls produced today
  • 90 to 100 percent Clean Surface
  • Near round, appear perfectly round from 1 yard away
  • Highest grade of freshwater pearls

AA 

  • Good to moderate matching
  • Top 10 percent of freshwater pearls produced today
  • 80 to 100 percent Clean surface
  • Near round to off-round
  • Exhibit good to average luster

A    

  • Moderate to heavy blemishing
  • Near round to off-round
  • Exhibit average to no luster
  • Commercial
  • Good to moderate matching
  • Top 20 percent of freshwater pearls produced today
  • 70 to 100 percent Clean surface
  • Near round to off-round
  • Exhibit average to low luster
