If you have decided to purchase a piece of pearl jewelry for yourself or someone else, you should not be surprised if the process is not as simple as you expected. When you first begin looking at pearls, you will have to decide the type of jewelry item you want – a necklace, earrings, hairpiece, bracelet, etc. Then, once you decide upon the type of jewelry you wish to purchase, you will have even more questions to answer. If you’re purchasing a necklace, do you want a pendant or a pearl strand? And if a strand, what length?

At this point, the incredible variety of pearl items may truly start to feel overwhelming. Even once you’ve chosen the type and style of jewelry you want, you still have to choose among Akoya, South Sea and other types of pearls, and then settle upon a size, shape and even a color.

If you find yourself a bit overwhelmed with the process and worried about making the right selection, perhaps you should take a step back and start over. Maybe answering each of the “selection questions” in order is not the best process for you. Try starting with the recipient – is it yourself or someone else? And regardless of the answer, you should ask what the recipient’s style is like. Conservative? Flashy? Is this someone who does not wear much jewelry and would best be served with a piece which can be worn frequently and with a number of wardrobe choices, or does this person have a large jewelry collection and would like something unique?

When all else fails, trust your jeweler. They have the experience you’re lacking, and they can help to limit your choices based upon your needs and budget, so that you are not overwhelming yourself with selections which do not suit your purpose.

Pearl buying should be an enjoyable process. And with a few deep breaths and the help of a friendly and knowledgeable jeweler, it can be a pleasure.
